What is a sick visit?

A sick visit diagnoses an acute health problem, like an injury or illness. It’s a quick outpatient (or telehealth) appointment that includes a discussion of your symptoms, a physical exam, lab testing, and treatment recommendations. You might assume sick visits are for kids, but anyone who isn’t feeling well can benefit.

What types of health problems can sick visits diagnose?

Bowman Family Medicine Clinic, LLC uses sick visits to diagnose various health problems, including:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Respiratory illnesses like the common cold, flu, COVID-19, and bronchitis
  • Rashes
  • Strep throat
  • Pink eye
  • Whooping cough
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Insect bites
  • Minor burns
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Sprains and strains

Don’t wait to schedule a sick visit if you or your child are ill for more than a few days.

What happens during a sick visit?

Bowman Family Medicine Clinic, LLC tailors sick visits to each person’s needs. Even so, most sick visits include a three-step approach:

Step 1: Review of medical history and discussion of symptoms

First, your provider reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, what they feel like, and if certain activities worsen them. Answer your provider’s questions honestly and tell them if you have allergies or take any medications or supplements.

Step 2: Physical exam

Next, your provider completes a physical exam. The exam looks different for everyone. For instance, if you have a sore throat and cough, your provider examines your throat, listens to your lungs, and feels your lymph nodes.

If you have a swollen ankle, they check your joint for bruising and swelling and complete an ultrasound or X-rays to assess the damage to your muscles, ligaments, and bones.

Step 3: Lab testing and treatment recommendations

If your physical exam doesn’t provide enough information to make a diagnosis, your provider orders lab testing, like blood work, urinalysis, or a throat swab.

After determining the source of your illness, your provider makes personalized treatment recommendations. That might include prescription medication, a cast or splint, or a referral to a medical specialist. The goal is to prevent your sickness from worsening and speed up the healing process.
